Approximately fifty automobiles have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.
Officers say they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then discovered numerous other smeared cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report initial examinations show the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; authorities are not yet informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they added.
City officials stated they were trying "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A high-ranking official stated the attack left him speechless and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing attack in 2020," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine people by a shooter targeting individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
