Trump Demands Jailing of Windy City Mayor and Illinois Governor as Military Forces Arrive in City

Former President Donald J. Trump on midweek demanded the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of not safeguarding ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for failing to secure ICE Officers!" Trump wrote on social media early Wednesday. "The Illinois governor too!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic party.

These remarks coincide with the arrival of National Guard personnel in the Chicago region under orders from the federal administration, notwithstanding strong objections from state officials such as Pritzker and Johnson.

"This represents yet another attempt where Trump attempted to have a Black man unjustly detained," Johnson responded on that day. "I'm not going put."

Pritzker also replied via online channels, stating: "I refuse to yield. Now Trump is demanding arrests of democratically chosen representatives resisting his authority. What remains on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?"

As of midweek, military units from the Lone Star State had reached the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation roughly 50 miles from the city, as the administration advances with its hardline crime strategy and immigration enforcement operations.

The president has called Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", even though official statistics indicate significant drops in most criminal activities, including murders.

That day, two hundred state guard members were scheduled to arrive to the Chicago area, with an additional three hundred state military personnel readying for deployment, per reports. Authorities reportedly stated the soldiers would not perform law enforcement duties but would protect federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Soldiers wearing uniforms with state guard patches were spotted at the US army reserve center in the town. Vehicles labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off portable toilets and other supplies. Trailers were arranged in rows. Extra barriers was installed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration imposed no-fly zones over the military base for safety concerns until 6 December.

The administration has escalated deportation operations in the city in recent weeks, sparking demonstrations, particularly near an immigration center in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, state and city filed a lawsuit targeting the federal government, attempting to halt the military dispatch, urging a federal judge to stop what they describe as "Trump's long-declared 'War'" on Chicago and Illinois, calling it "unlawful and dangerous".

A court hearing on their case is scheduled for Thursday.

Mayor Johnson also signed an directive on Monday prohibiting federal immigration agents and others from using municipal facilities as staging areas for enforcement actions.

The governor has accused Trump of using troops as "political props" and "chess pieces".

During a press briefing on the previous day, Pritzker said that the president is attempting to "justify and make acceptable the deployment of military personnel under his personal authority."

The nearly 150-year-old Posse Comitatus Act limits the military's role in civilian law enforcement. However, Trump has stated he would be prepared to activate the emergency powers, which allows a president to dispatch active duty military in states that are unable to put down an uprising or are defying national authority.

Since starting his second term, the president has dispatched or mentioned sending troops to at least 10 urban centers, including major metropolitan areas and West Coast locations like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the military presence is necessary to combat crime and defend immigration agents.

Data shows that serious offenses across the US has decreased in recent years. In Chicago, for example, homicides were down 31% to 278 through August, per police data.

New survey data published on that day revealed that the majority of US citizens disapprove of the sending of military forces without an foreign danger.
