The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the animated series will take a three-month hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will release a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a six-month break that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the visuals and let the manga to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to supply fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the series covering one chapter, with others instead handling more material or more to compensate for time.

This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the art can change drastically between installments and the next. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple at most releasing each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
