Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
